Discuss Part IV ~ Betrayals. Didja think it was Cole that betrayed Molly? Really? I saw it coming from Walter all along. Discuss what happened in Darrin.

I remember thinking I was going to be SO MAD at the author if Cole turned out to be a bad guy.  Not for one minute did I think Cole could have been bad.  Maybe one second though.  But I also thought maybe he was inadvertantly helping the bad guys out…

That's why I didn't try to drag it out. It wasn't important to really fool the reader, but show Molly's reaction to THINKING she'd been fooled.

There were a few seeds planted to raise your suspicion along the way, but it was hard to conceal Cole's goodness.

Well, I know several people that read the book and most of them got pretty suspicious of Cole. I was patting myself on the back for believing in him despite the evidence building to the contrary!!  Of course, I guess we won't REALLY ever know until the last bookk in the series.

How many books do you think there will be??

I disliked the salesman. Maybe because I dislike salesmen altogether. But I disliked him immensely, maybe because of the way he talked. Or maybe because I knew something was up with him, and I disliked him even more when Molly saw the Drenard chained up. I am happy that she broke free, with the help of Molly and Edison of course. And I have to ask, I probably should've asked in the other book thread, I keep imagining the Glemots to look like a creature from where the wild things are. But maybe that's just me. Or was it something you were going for?

Okay, so…yeah, I didn't want to believe that Cole betrayed her. I didn't. My heart broke with Molly. It literally cracked to feel the pain she felt from learning a guy she trusted and loved would betray her. Then, I was so relieved when she found out it was all a joke. Or, sabotage. It hurt to think that she would be betrayed at all, since it seemed that Walter was infatuated with her. But being a Palan, it seems that money will always rule. Or I could be wrong. I was shocked she forgave him, but I think she did it more for peace of mind, then again, I don't know for sure. Maybe it was the pain in his face, or the look in his eyes when he said SSSSSorry.

I was just relieved, just relieved when it was all a lie.

I didn't drag out that deception very long on purpose. I don't even worry if people ever truly thought that Cole was working against her. Whether the reader was fooled or not isn't important compared to what MOLLY was going through, so I'm glad you felt that way and picked up on that. Her firing that laser was a heinous, dangerous act that could only have come after Palan, Glemot, Darrin, Anlyn, Cole…

If there's an overall theme for book one it's that all people have their breaking point. All of us. Molly doesn't have many flaws. That's intentional. I made her as strong and moral and intelligent and decent as possible. Then I broke her. Literally and figuratively. And at the end, she's a different person because of it. Good and beautiful, but scarred. Able to watch a man die and attack another with no remorse. The fact that she ran out of the Academy without a tear, and compared to her first exit, defines her transition.

It isn't that she becomes a bad person, not at all. It's that she becomes AWARE of the bad around her. The struggle we all face is to gain wisdom without becoming cynical. I think Molly did a decent job at that.
