I lived Wool but I’ve found Shift really disappointing. Moving from one time period to another was distracting.

I am hesitant to buy books by Hugh C. Howey. I get so engrossed that I keep missing my metro stop by at least two stations. I suppose I will just have to put up with the inconvenience.

Can’t wait to read this. I must say though, the covers for the first five books are so much better. This latest one is so generic looking. But hey, who cares about the cover.

Truly chilling. An amazing job of not using one simple technological advance but multiples along fully believable lines to reach yet another fully understandable decision-point. Characters are fallible and not superhuman and the progression well-told.

Amazing to see the world of the silos come into being that made the first five stories actually more enjoyable.

Please could you make First Shift available on kindle in the UK.
I have just finished Wool Omnibus and am dying to start First Shift, even to buy in paperback from Amazon in the UK will take 2 weeks.
    Yours hopefully …..

They are working on putting the 6th book back up. Random House owns the rights in the UK, now. Shouldn’t be too long, I hope. :(

Hugh, any news for Australia? Getting the dreaded currently unavailable message for the kindle edition.

        Rgds, Sean.

          Sean,

Random House has the files for book 6. They are going through them and formatting the books for upload, from what I understand. I hope it won’t be too long.

            Hi Hugh,

Do you have any update on this? I want to buy First Shift on Amazon in the UK, but it says it isn’t available. Kobo (non-DRM, right?) doesn’t appear to have it either.

I’ve tried torrent sites, but ended up with some dodgey password-encrypted file, so I’m getting desperate!

            Keep up the good work!

          • Thanks, picked up the kindle version the other day! Now ready for next shift :)

I have the same problem, I’ve just finished the Wool series and I couldn’t put it down! I hope Random house can fix this soon for those of us in UK.

I just finished First Shift, it was great. Something’s been bugging me though since I noticed it – is there any significance to the page # for page 99 being “99%” or is just a random misprint?

Going nuts trying to purchase a copy of First Shift for my ipad. Amazon says kindle version not available. Seriously, you need to ensure that electronic versions of your book are easily available from various website, why not sell direct from your own? There is nothing worse than trying to get hold of a electronic version of anything and being told – “not available in your area”. I have just finished the WOOL omnibus and really want first shift. :(

    • Hugh C. Howey on said:

Sorry about this, czar! Are you outside the US? The digital rights have been purchased in some territories, which takes them out of my control. Let me know where you live so I can see if there’s anything I can do for you.

  12. I loved WOOL (I’m an old-school SF reader) and just bought First Shift. Keep it up! I purchased both through amazon.com, as I live in Australia. My wife has borrowed my Kindle so I transferred First Shift onto my daughter’s to read at night, only to discover that I can’t because it’s DRM protected and locked to my device. It won’t convert to mobi either. I then tried with WOOL and found that it’s also DRM locked. Have you changed your policy, or is this an Amazon special deal for Australian readers? Not a big problem – it’s a testament to your writing that I’m miffed about having to wait a couple of weeks…

    • Hugh C. Howey on said:

Man, I’m sorry to hear about this. I no longer own the UK and Australian rights to the WOOL books. In order to bring the print books to overseas readers, I signed with Random House, which is putting a lot of muscle into a huge release in your country. It meant giving up the ebook rights, which keeps me from controlling price and DRM.

I hate DRM. It makes me sad that I have books out there saddled with it. I know that I won’t be able to dent corporate policy (I’m a little nobody by comparison), but I’ll let them know how this affects readers.

I just finished the prequel! Another incredible book! Now on to the Molly Fyde series. Thanks Hugh! Keep up the good work!

  14. I just finished the Wool Omnibus, and I loved it! So of course I have to read this one too. Just hope I can wait another 8 – 12 days.

Any chance for an audio version of Wool 6/7? Wool 1-5 were great to listen to!

    • Same here…When can we expect the Shift series to be released in audio? Wool Omnibus was great during my daily communte through Atlanta. Thanks!

  17. Ok so I am a nitpicker… but also a LONG time SF reader, Campbell, Heinlein, Asimov, when they were alive.
nit 1 did you deliberately ignore “the bends” (Jules dive to mechanical). I’m guessing so as that would overly complicate the story.
nit 2 The ground does not get colder as you get deeper, it gets warmer. I suppose this premise helps flesh out the story. The truth however is that COLD air would need to be pumped down to mechanical, the heat build up over the years in a silo would be tremendous!
Alright no more nits… I LOVED the story and am looking forward to reading “First Shift” (and second).
    Thanks

I have to say, Hugh, that you have created the scifi series of my generation. I am 19 years old and I can’t put your books down! I own all but two on the Kindle and I am currently purchasing them all in print so I have hard copies that are signed by you. Extremely excited about that. I have to say that your world has pulled me in and will never let me go. It is just that well thought out and that well written.
I do have a question for you. Are any of the book covers available in a poster? I really would like to start buying them if they are and if they aren’t, I would suggest making them available. You have one fan here who would buy all of them, and I suspect, I am not the only one.
Loved all your books so far and can’t wait to read the rest!
    In Christ,
    Nicholas X. Hall
