Happy New Year!

Thank you from the Down Deep of my heart to everyone who made this past year the wildest of my life. It has been an amazing ride. Ever since I was a young boy, wearing out paperbacks like there was no tomorrow, I’ve dreamed of being a writer. I never expected to be a decent one, or one who sold more than a handful of books, I just wanted to complete a novel. One book. And then I’d be able to die happy.

One book turned into ten. The hope of selling a handful turned into an appearance on national bestseller lists. The aspiration of reaching a reader or two has led to amazing friendships and thousands of acquaintances.

Thank you, each of you. I hope 2013 is as amazing for you as 2012 has been for me. Whatever you dream of, chase it. Even if you don’t catch it, you might give it a good scare.

  1. I was searching for something new when I found Wool a couple of months ago. I couldn’t stop reading. I have since read the Molly Fyde series, Hurricane, and I have downloaded the others. I have a few of my friends reading Wool and have been telling all of my clients and friends about you. I have a new favorite author! I am eagerly anticipating the rest of the Silo series and all your future work! I am so happy that I found you and for all of your success! I think you are great. Thank you for all the hard work you’ve put in. I know there are many like me that truly appreciate it. I hope that 2013 is another amazing year for you!

  2. Please allow me to pile on. Really great work you’re doing. I’ve now got all the sibs engaged (big family) and everyone is onboard. You’re welcome. :-)

I Zombie is very interesting work. I don’t know if you’re the first to write from a Zombie’s point of view but your characterizations seem spot on to me. Very compelling read.

Glad all your hopes and dreams are coming true. Kind of nice when life works out like that.. …. Keep up the great work!

    Jeff

  3. I’m thrilled to have been a part of it this year and I look forward to more amazing literature and relationships in the coming year.

  4. Sorry for being a day late, but Happy New Year to you.

I, too, am happy to have had a seat on your 2012 Gravy Train. May 2013 be just as good, if not better.

    Blessings. :)

  5. Happy New Year to you, Amber, and Bella! It has been a blast watching your writing catch on and take off. Thanks for all the reading pleasure you have brought to me. I look forward to more in the future… so get busy!

  6. Happy New Year. You’ve made yourself accessible to your readers and that means a lot. It’s inspired me to keep writing, to finish my current writing project, and that’s based significantly on seeing how you have found success as an indie author. Thanks and may this year be filled with more discoveries and thrills as you grow in your success.

  7. Happy new year!

Keep up your awesome work, you’re *the* example I give to people of how the future will look like in terms of distribution, copyright stance and “community interaction”.

People love not only reading great books, they want to be part of a journey. Talking to readers about the writing of the books and everything around that gives them the chance to feel like they’re part of something, which is something basically everyone wants.

Happy new year! Good luck with all your 2013 projects :)

  8. a new year can only mean a new molly fyde ;) ;)

  11. Thanks for digging down deep and finding these stories, Hugh.

  12. Happy New Year, Hugh. You have brought me and my wife joy and inspiration in 2012. Much luck in 2013!

  13. Happy New Year, Hugh! You have brought me and my wife joy and inspiration in 2012. Here’s to much luck and success in 2013!

  14. Congrats on being in the Amazon yearly holiday press release!

” 23 Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) authors each sold over 250,000 copies of their books in 2012. Top sellers this year include Hugh Howey, author of the New York Times best seller “WOOL,” Stephanie Bond, author of “Stop the Wedding!,” the #2 best-selling book in the Kindle Store in December, and Barbara Freethy and CJ Lyons—both members of the Kindle Million Club. “

  15. I want the Third Shift or Dusk or whatever it’s going to be called right now! The anticipation is agonizing (but that’s because I read all of the Wool series in mere days). I was completely drawn in by your book and really felt a connection to the characters and the plot. I’m anxiously awaiting the next book in the Wool series. Thank you so much for a great read and finally a new author I’m excited about!

  16. I am so glad I was here with you since the start! It has been so exciting to witness all the new and exciting things you are experiencing along with you!

I can’t believe it was over a year ago that I stumbled over to this website to ask about the Molly series, and look at you now! I’m so proud of you for handling everything with such grace and I am pleased to call myself one of your fans!

I can’t wait to see what 2013 brings!

  17. Well deserved Hugh- Congrats on the great year and hope 2013 makes 2012 look small for you.

  18. I’ve been obsessed with your Wool series for the past month. Nothing has gotten done in my house. Aching for March for the next Shift to come out. Anxious to start your other work. Love love love it.

  19. I convinced my mother to read Wool. That’s a grand achievement in my book.

  20. Thank you for creating a wonderful series! I have read each and everyone and plan to read your other books as well. Have a happy and fruitful New Year!

  21. Hugh, that was wonderful and heartfelt. You deserve everything that comes your way. I’ve never known such a down to earth and humble author! It has been a great pleasure reading your books and getting to know you. You inspire me!

  22. Mr. Howey, I don’t know if you noticed it, but at Amazon the Paperback edition of Wool ‘only’ has 700 reviews, the ones that belong to Wool 1. Shouldn’t it have the 3,000 reviews that belong to the Omnibus Edition? If someone is searching paperbacks, I think having 3,000 with a five star average instead of 700 with 4 and a half stars can make a difference.

    1. Yeah, they did something goofy this week that has the versions mixed up.

  23. Hi Hugh,

wish you a great 2013 with great success as well
(just being egoistic here and hoping for more books ;)

But I really wanted to tell that the message I sent with the coffee was too short – wanted to say that you sell your books for so little that they are essentially free – not that they are free… But I still would love to see them DRM-free :)

Thank you for the wonderful time I spent in your books

  24. I read Wool 1-5 on my honeymoon last month and was blown away.

I’m in the middle of First Shift, and every so often I have to stand up and walk around the room with my hands on my hand, mind reeling from the sheer awesomeness of this book! SERIOUSLY!

I cannot wait for the hardcovers to be on my bookshelves. Best book series I’ve read since Harry Potter. ;)

  25. I just completed your Wool series and downloaded books 6 and 7 from your Silo series. I know you said at the end of Wool 5 that the two books would be coming out together, but I couldn’t wait when I found them. I am like you, when i was younger I couldn’t read enough. I even tried keeping the hardcopies, but as I got older I had a harder time finding room on the bookshelves. Now I read them on my Nook, so I can keep them ALL. Although i do miss the paper, dog-earred pages and unusual bookmarks that seem to make their way into hardcopies. I say all this so you will know when I state, you are a good writer! Keep up the writing and I will keep up the reading.
